I have an old Epson 1400 that I have not used in a few years.
I would like to set up this printer again. I am assuming that I would need to by new ink cartridges.
Is there anything else I need to do. Like unclog the nozzles/print-heads?
I would like to print wireless to this printer from my Mac. Are there any challenges to do that? My iMac is running Mountain Lion

The Epson Stylus Photo 1400 is not a wireless printer natively. In other words it only has USB 2 wired connectivity. You could possibly use a printer server or similar to connect to a network but that might be a little problematic, seeing how these devices can be a little finicky.
Depending on how the printer was stored during its down time you may be facing some difficulty with severely clogged print heads. You'll definitely want to be prepared with new ink cartridges because the old ones are probably well past the expiration date. But before simply changing them out I would take each one out give it a healthy shake and see if you can tell if they still have some ink in them. If they do use these to run some nozzle checks and cleaning cycles before you install the new cartridges. This way you aren't using perfectly good ink to clear the nozzles. If you get some really stubborn clogging try making a solution of Windex mixed with distilled water at a ratio of 1:1 and put it in an eye dropper bottle. Turn on the printer and press the ink cartridge access button to move the print heads away from the parking station. Look for a small pad where the print heads sit when the printer is off. Place a few drops of the Windex solution on the pad to lightly wet it. Reset the print heads and turn the printer off. Leave it to soak the print heads over night and then run some cleaning cycles and see if that doesn't solve the stubborn clogs.

I had some ink in the old cartridge. That I used. to try to clean the print heads to no avail. I used 1/3 of the new cartridge cleaning the ink heads still no progress.
I am ready to try the distilled water/windex option. But I where can I buy the distill water? If I remove the new ink cartridges will I ruin them? What probability will this solution work?
Would it be more cost effective to get a new printer. The ink cartridges are half the price of an EPSON Artisan 1430. I read a few years ago that the newer printers have a mechanism to keep the heads/nozzles from clogging - which printers have this feature?

I bought A brand new Canon PIXMA Pro 9000 MARK II from eBay for $139 plus shipping.
This seemed like an easier cheaper route to go than trying to clean the print heads on the epson.
I guess the moral of the story is that you have to occasionally use hardware in order to keep it in good working order.
