i am thinking of getting one of these printers. i don't think i will be doing anything over an 8x10 but it might be nice to do once in a while. Should i go for the 2200 or the 960? i heard that the 960 has a new and improved print head. what do you think? i can get either one the price is not a problem, but saving an extra 400.oo is money i can spend on something else. I looked at the 2200, which you can get for pretty cheap over here in Japan at Discount stores. I opted for the 830 instead because I didn't need the larger printing size.
If I remember right the 960 offers more dpi than the 2200. If I were you I would go for the newer one. I am sure that there have been improvements with other things under the hood. I think there is a full year of difference between the release dates. I am sure Epson put quite a bit of new knowledge into it. Also, I heard there is a HUGE speed increase in the 960.
Sorry for the above posts. I think the model numbers here in Japan and the US are different. There is a old 2000 series that does not take crome inks, we must be talking about different printers. Ignore my post above.
I went with the 960 because I wasn't going to print over 8 x 10 at home. The 960 uses a different ink technology than the 2200, so just comparing the heads may not be apples to apples. The 2200 uses the new chrome inks from Epson. I have been extremely happy with the 960 and it's print quality. I have been using Ilford Smooth Pearl paper and the results are fabulous. I print at 1440 dpi, not the 2880. Speed is pretty good and the prints are great. I also use Qimage for my printing.
The main reason to get a 2200 is for the large carriage and the Ultrachrome ink. If you don't care about the dye vs pigment issue why not consider the 1280? It may be a little slower than the 960, but you will be able to print large. I think Epson is still offering a $100 rebate on the 1280. I personally am waiting for a small carriage version of the 2200.
