I was considering purchasing the Solmeta N3 with separate cables for my D700 and D7100. However, I see that the cable on the N3 is now integrated with the unit, so my question is: Is Solmeta now expecting us to purchase a separate unit for each of the cameras (with different attachment points) on which we want to use an N3? Twice during the last month or so I have sent an e-mail inquiry to Solmeta, with no response. Are they planning to offer some type of adapter? Are the cables interchangeable anyway? If you can't use one unit on different bodies, it seems like a rather lousy marketing plan from a customer's point of view, at least in MHO.
JRP, do you have any info on this? Do any of you folks know?
According to a product reviewer on the Solmeta pages, the attachment to the N3 is fixed so you need one for each camera model:
"...The hardwired cable eliminates a failure point at the cost of making the unit specific to a particular camera model, but I think the reliability is probably more important than flexibility. Thanks for the exemplary service! ".
Thanks for your response. I was afraid that would be the case, but thought it a good idea to seek input from others more in the know. I suspect that many others with multiple bodies will be looking elsewhere for their GPS units. One would think that Solmeta would have come up with a better solution, such as a cable adapter. The Pro 2 might have been an alternative, but it doesn't work with a Mac. I'd like to know how our Pro Photo Shop feels about this development.
I was sitting here pondering this problem, when the thought came to me: why would I need to sync the Pro 2 to a computer other than to install any future firmware updates? Can you think of one? I do have a Windows Vista partition on one of my hard drives, although all my downloading and post is done on a Snow Leopard partition. From looking at the units on the photo pro shop, it appears to me that the cables on the Pro 2 are interchangeable. If that is the case, and there would be no other reason to sync with a computer, I would be very tempted to buy the Pro 2 with cables for both the D700 and D7100.
I'm off to the photo pro shop to order the Pro 2. While surfing looking for info on the Pro 2 I came across a website that had a comment indicating that the Pro 2 will now work natively with the Mac OS:
