Here\'s the results of my investigations into NEF thumbnails under Service Pack 2.
You've basically got a choice of NEFView for $10 or dpMagic. dpMagic Plus is $9.95 and has a lot of nice features, but the Community Edition is free and supports thumbnails for NEF as well as lots of other raw formats. Both products work great under SP2.
While it would have been nice had Microsoft (or Adobe) fixed this, and they still might, it's nice that there are solutions available out there.
No, they work seamlessly with Windows itself. If you open a folder with jpegs in it for instance and choose the Thumbnail view from the menu (remember, this is in Windows itself, not a separate application like Nikon View) you can see thumbnails of your images rather than just the standard jpeg icon. Both NEFView and dpMagic add this ability for NEF (and other formats in the case of dpMagic).
This image here is of NEF files natively in Windows.
Once again, a Nikonian comes to the rescue. Thanks, Bob, for posting the link to dpmagic. I downloaded the free version and it works great. The problem has been fixed even before I knew there really was one
That gives you the Thumbnail view back. It does not give you a thumbnail in the "Deatils" pane of the list of details view though, and of course no EXIF data. Still, it sure is progress. I'm sticking with dpMagic though.
Bob, you are awesome. Someday, if you haven't already, you should put together a list of software tools you use. I bet a few of us would do just fine following the path you have taken. For now, thanks for the current tip.
P.S. To the guy that found the free Microsoft solution, I extend the same gratitude. It really is phenomenal to have such a great group of people always on the forefront of the issues helping each other out.

I second the motion. All those in favor, say "aye!"
