I have used Sofortbild for several years with my D3 and D3s. There a lot of versatility and control, and best of all is it's free. It has been updated for the Dd, D800, and D800e, though I know there is a bug with the "e".

do you mean tethered shooting in general or D800 in particular? What "sort of tethering" do you mean?
I had a fast group and portrait shooting session 3 months ago with my D3 attached to a tripod standing on a table and connected to a Windows laptop using the short cable which came with the camera. Using the tethered mode from Lightroom I was able to import and display every image within 2-3 seconds to check for results (e.g., eyes not closed). It was also possible to shoot by clicking a button in Lightroom. It worked pretty well; there was just one hickup during the shooting when Lightroom became unresponsive and I had to kill and restart it. I didn't lose the last picture, though.
I thought that using the tethered mode at least this way it was not camera type-specific?
That's good to know. I've had problems in the past with LR, it doesn't store in camera either. It had a tendency to lock up and loose the image between transfers, or if the USB cord would get jarred....same thing. Had it happen in the studio with children on the shot they decided was the last they were allowing. Quite frustrating.
