I looked through the Nikkor's section, but didn't see any recent discussion of the 80-400VR lens, save for a small commentary by JRP I think. But it seemed pretty preliminary.
So...What's the real consensus? Is this a fantastic lens? A bad compromise? A sharp, expensive, slow-focussing zoom? A totally great, overall winner?
Please give a thorough review of this lens if you've put it through its paces.
I currently have Nikkor 28-105D, 70-300ED-D and a Tokina ATX 400/5.6APO. If the 80-400 is really a winner, I'd probably sell the 70-300 and the 400/5.6 and go for the 80-400. But it's pretty pricey, and it must truly be better to justify a switch.
What do you think?
