We had some wild weather today in Phoenix. I was lucky to be in a good spot when the storm came rolling across the Uptown area. When I was a kid these were just called dust storms but now it is fashionable to use the Arabic word haboob. I feel silly somehow calling it a haboob.
Nice capture Dean. I have a friend that lives in that area. I could not stop laughing the first time I heard him call one of these storms a Haboob. I hear they can be pretty nasty though. Nice view for you though.
I guess I'm not pretentious enough to call it a haboob either without laughing. I was fortunate enough to be in a good spot when it hit. I didn't see it coming as the mountain was blocking my view of its path.
We get haboobs out here regularly - but as I live in Arabia the name is pretty normal. Can't think why you would want to call them that out there in Arizona though... I'd go back to calling them dust storms if I were you - after all Arizona isn't in Arabia...
