I had an unexpected opportunity last Sunday evening while sitting in an elevated deer stand. I was hunting feral hogs but I brought the D300 with the Nikkor 300mm AF-S f/4.0 and was hoping to get some images of deer or a fox. The sun had just dropped below the hills when a large bird of prey flew towards me from a nearby hill. This guy landed about 30 yards away. I was shooting freehand and as slow on the shutter speed as I dared try. Out of about 8 shots this was one of only two worth post processing. This one won't be featured in a magazine or even hanging on my wall, but I am happy I got it.
I have only seen great horned owls in my part of Texas a couple of times. I mainly see barred owls and several types of hawks and kites, so these guys are real treats when I see them.
