Saturday afternoon. About 20 minutes before the open space area closed for the day. The sandhill cranes were past the end of my zoom and shutter speed (edit way at the end of their field). Finally, a flock took off for a revolution around the airspace before settling in to graze (giving me something to shoot). 1 crane, 10 geese.
Thanks, Derek. Serendipitous. It wasn't until they all flew off to their roost for the night that more birds were in the air long enough for me to take a few shots. By then, my 4-5.6 tele lens, even set to ISO 1600, was unable to produce noise- and motion blur-free images.
