Hi AlanC, Nice picture.Using the nice lens at 24mm and presumbly hand held,it looks like a macro shot to me. is it selectively cropped and enlarged on screen and how close were you to the poppy? Thanks, jasper
Nice picture! Noticed the lense you used is one I might be interested in buying. How do you like this lense? Is it tack-sharp? And, do you find yourself using it frequently? Looking for advice before purchasing.
I find it rather difficult to comment on the optical qualities of lenses since I'm using them with the D1. Remember that the D1's CCD is two-thirds of the size of a 35mm frame - meaning that I won't see effects such as vignetting or loss of sharpness in the corners of the image. It also means that the "effective" focal length is multiplied by a factor of 1.5, so for me this lens is equivalent to a 25.5 to 52.5 zoom.
OK, disclaimers over: in optical terms I can't fault this lens. Images are as sharp as I could possibly wish for, and I haven't noticed any significant barrel / pincushion distortion. I would say it's slightly more prone to flare than my 28-70, though.
Given the short focal length, the SilentWave motor makes the autofocus unbelievably fast in operation.
My only criticism is trivial: I don't like are the rubber grips on the zoom and focus rings. These don't have the rounded-off profile you find on the other AF-S lenses, and feel rather sharp in comparison.
If you're thinking of buying, I doubt you'd ever regret it. I've always had a passion for wide angle lenses and this is without doubt the best I've ever owned.
