Handheld with VR on. I was carrying a tripod, but didn't have time to set it up. Shutter speed was about 1/250 at 400mm. She was about 12ft (4 meters) away ("fool hen" range?). The more critter shots I try, the more I respect the stalking skills that go into professional wildlife photos. This hen was very cooperative since she wanted us to watch her and not the chicks.
Very nice! This gal has some fancier plumage - the head crest is striking.
I'm not a photo diary person. I can sometimes remember when I'm using a particular shutter speed or aperture, but not both. With the VR lens, I can often recall approximate shutter speeds because they are lower than I would try to hand hold without engaging the feature.
