We just did a weeklong trip to the Sawtooths in Idaho. We did a lot of mountainbiking and hiking and I didn't get much photography time. The "witches sticks" (a medieval name for the plant) are woolly mullein stalks that are a year or more old. In those days, the stalks were dipped in tallow to make torches. It's amazing what trivia you can learn via a Google search...
