Was out visiting friends the other weekend. It had been raining cats & dogs for the most part. When we got a little break we took a drive through their neck of the woods. Of course I spotted a barn and had to shoot it. There was still some mist in the air & heavy cloud cover. The color version just didn't fly so B&W it became. Still very new to creating B&W so any thoughts here would be helpful.
Scott, this obsession with barns is great! I'd pump the contrast a bit. If you have CS5 (or 6?), I'd play with the defaults in Adjustments>Black&White, especially Infrared. I like the effect when converting to b&w. Use the presets as starting points. What I like about the tool is that you don't need to move the sliders, just click on an area of the image to adjust density (up to decrease, down to increase).
Hi Scott, By chance I got onto the BW-forum. Maybe it is my in-calibrated monitor but to my taste the whites are too bright. I would suggest a darker sky and grass (wheat). I would leave the Barn as is. I think the barn would than stand out better.
