Yeah, this is quite a bridge, and, since you asked, yes you can walk around underneath as well as on the sidewalk on the bridge surface. There is a pedestrian/bike way along the side of the roadway and near the top right you can see an observation point for walker on the bridge. Underneath the bridge, to get back to your question, they created a recreation area with three playgrounds, a big basketball court, benches, a dock for launching canoes, and a dock for fishing...and, believe it or not....parking. They also renovated the small lighthouse near the bridge on the Virginia shore. The lighthouse kinda marks the position of the first, and southernmost land marker for the District of Columbia (Washington D.C.). This is one of the best uses of land Alexandria has developed since I've been here. By the way, the view is from Alexandria toward Prince Georges County, MD.
