Just curious how often people make use of the 1:1 capability of a true macro lens. Obviously for flowers or even insects shown with some background context it is not used. Any input from experience would be appreciated.
I found that 1:2 was a serious limitation for me, especially with flowers. I even find 1:1 to be a limitation, although not a serious problem. On the other hand many of those frames are tending toward the abstract, which many people don't like.
For models (eg trains, not women on a runway) it's a mixed bag. I get a lot of them done with the 85 PC, which only goes to 1:2. But others require getting in really close, for which a 1:1 lens really is much better. This too seems to be something that other folks don't do much.
For insects I find myself pretty much always as close as I can arrange.
