Nice shots Felix, I think beach volleyball is a great sport for photography. Sun, sand and lots of action, I've covered the local competitions here in the UK and it certainly beats the indoor version of the game. I think the combination of D2 and 70-200 2.8 is a great for the size of court too. Still looking for a shot of the serve when hand and ball make contact. I have one where the ball is squashed almost flat by the force but unfortunately the focus was bit off. Would love to see some more of your shots, I have quite a few on my website.
I've also had a go at shooting a local beach volleyball tournament last summer. One thing I realised when reviewing my shots after the event, is that most of my shots showed the side or behind of the players, because the net would obscure the faces and fronts of people. Your shots certainly don't have that problem, I guess you are sitting down shooting under the net from the other side?
And also, are you using a monopod with the 70-200, given its size? I was just shooting with my (very light) 70-300 f4-5.6 with no support, but have been planning to get a 70 (or 80) - 200 f2.8 Nikkor lens but am a bit offput by their size, although I'm sure it will be worth it for optical quality and f2.8.
This shots were taken, as you say, from behind the net. I try to focus on the player I believe will be receiving the ball. Having only two players at the nearest side of the court, relative to the camera it is quite easy to get shots like this, but when it comes to indoors V.ball, with six players, I rather shoot from a side. The 70-200 is a great lens. Once you get use to it you won't find it so big. Actually, I would describe it rather large. big was a 300 f2.8 I use to owe and that I regret I had to sold. I did not use a monopod although I have one. Had I used it I think the photos could have being a little sharper though. Thanks for looking Paul. Here's another one.
OK, cool, thank you very much for the tips and information. That new shot is also a good one, well timed capture of the action. Something for me to aim for, if only winter will hurry up and finish here - feel free to post more and share the summer vibe.
>Paul, >If Felix will excuse me I thought I'd post one from last >weekend. We have had some unusually good weather here in the >UK recently so the action on the beach has been fast and >frantic. >
Good to know there has been some action in your area Matt. This is a nice shot: I like the out of focus background which sometimes is hard to achieve when shooting from the other side of the court. We had the sub-18 tournament last weekend but I could not assist. The next event wil be the adult category and it starts in July and last all the way to August with several different cups played.
Nice shot and had a look over your website too, some more good shots. Keep the summer vibe coming, it was -2C here this morning. Which is probably nothing to someone in England, but hey, for sunny Australia it's about as cold as it gets!
