August Contest – “Speed”
This month’s challenge is “Speed”
In many sports, it is all about speed. How fast the athlete can run, swim, sail, etc. The speed of the ball, puck, racket, bat, etc.
So, the Challenge this month is to show images that convey a sense of speed. Perhaps it is by panning the shot, or creative blur!!
Example: The winning image from 2009 by sboswell
Participating in our monthly contests is a fun way to help us become better photographers. We can see and learn from all of the entries as our members showcase their best work each month.
These monthly contests are the preliminary rounds for the Annual Nikonians Photo Contest where you have the opportunity to win attractive prizes and have your images highlighted in the Winners Galleries and published in the eZine.
The top images will be selected by the winner of the previous months challenge and will be included in a poll for members to vote for the winning photo. Please keep in mind that images will be selected based on image quality, subject matter, relevance to the theme, and creativity just to name a few.
I look forward to seeing how you fulfill this challenge!

I made this image in approximately 1973 when I was a member of the Bushin-Kai Karate Club at Vandenberg AFB CA. I was experimenting here with a manual zoom while shooting action with slow shutter speed. I think it captures the essence of Karate's power. Shot with an F3HP and Tri-X film. Lens not recorded but most likely my 80-200 f/4 zoom manual focus lens. I scanned the negative with SilverFast Archive Suite 8, and added the border in PS CS6 extended.
I hope this is okay here. Paved road hillclimbing over a two mile course. This entrant was fastest woman this year D700, 80-200 f2.8,ISO 200, f4.5, 86mm, 1/160s, monopod. I had to slow the shutter speed so the wheels would blur. The cars passed in front of me at 70 mph.
