I'm tempted to get the new 80-400mm AF-S for rugby, where most games are in decent light and I shoot at f/5-ish anyway. Although I have the freedom to move around at field level, 200mm isn't quite long enough...

Pro
-The 80-400mm lens has a longer reach than my current 80-200mm 1:2.8D lens
-The 80-400mm lens is still longer, and sharper, than my 80-200mm D lens and 1.4x tele combination
-The 80-400mm lens is light weight and fairly compact

Con
-The 80-400mm lens is outrageously (over)priced
-Not EVERY game is in good light, possibly limiting my shutter speed
-Did I mention the price? Ugghhh
-I idiosyncratically HATE that the 80-400mm AF-S lens extends when zooming

I'm considering the 300mm f/4 lens. That lens plus my 1.4x tele would give me the same reach as the 80-400mm lens, maybe more sharpness, but I'd lose the critical short end.

Cheers,
Dave
