I sometimes shoot little league baseball games. When it looks like a run is going to be scored I aim at home plate and start shooting in AF-C mode. I am still getting too many OOF shots, and so I am thinking about using the focus-trap method. As I understand it the settings are:

> AFS
> Center focus point
> Use the rear AF lock button to prefocus
> Hold down the shutter button which should only fire when the runner crosses home plate.

My question is this. Once I press the rear AF Lock button do I hold it down the entire time until I get the shot, or can I release the AF lock once I have pre-focused?

I use a D300 and D7000.
