My lens arrived last night, so tonight I went and shot the girls HS BB game. Well, i guess it is 2am here, so technically it arrived 2 nights ago and last night i shot the game. It's late, sorry to ramble
I had to hit these babies hard to reduce them to 300k size
I am loving this lens so far.
edit: seems the size is still not correct, ugh back to editing
It is not as fast as my Nikon 70-200 VR1, though I felt it performed quite well. I plan to use it again and am likely to replace the 70-200 as my HS basketball lens. It was quite odd to not be able to zoom, I did miss that.
Since most of the focus was small increments I think it did fine. Now if I was focused on the far end and they threw the ball to a player on the near end, I doubt I would get the shot (in focus)whereas my zoom has a good chance to lock focus. How often does that happen though.
I probably would have cropped #1 tighter, but I agree that the OOF players in the background help the shot. #10 in the background is key. I'd either keep her as you did or crop tighter and eliminate her. Either way is good - it's all up to you (or your editor).
