Since 2010 the Chico High Panthers have beaten their cross-town rival PV (Pleasant Valley) High Vikings basketball team seven times in a row. Last Friday night the two teams met once again. Chico has a very strong team, and in the week prior to this game I saw them clobber two opponents by margins of 45 points and 31 points. It looked like the Vikings were going to have to take their lumps for an eighth straight time. These contests are a big deal in this town. So many people show up that the high schools have to rent the gym at Chico State to accommodate all of the spectators. As usual the noise level in the gym was frequently deafening as fans of both teams loudly cheered, screamed, and yelled. Chico had a lead in the first quarter but never again after that. They had a surge in the fourth quarter that cut the Vikings lead to three points, but when it was all said and done PV had earned a thrilling victory 62-55. I fully expected Chico to win this game so was surprised that PV was able to play a much better game than the Panthers. Needless to say, the PV fans were delirious with joy.

All shots were taken with D700. 50 mm. f/1.8 was used for images #1-#4; 80-200 f/2.8 for images #5-#7. I followed Chico in this game, so the shots are primarily of the Panthers in action.

3. #22 was his usual aggressive self and led the scoring for Chico with 17 points before fouling out late in the game.

6. #5 was without his customary sharp shooting touch and scored only 11 points. As is usually the case he had his mouth wide open when shooting.

7. After the game Vikings fans crowded the gym floor to celebrate the long-awaited victory.
