I have just got back from the holiday of a lifetime from Svalbard. If you get a chance to go grab it - along with your thermals! I have uploaded a few photo's which I hope will whet your appetite, all taken with new AFS 80-400 VR2. Very impressed with the lens. My gallery has some more pictures. Enjoy.
I have been very happy with the new 80-400, bought mainly as I find it easy to use handheld. With trips in mind I find the size, weight and general performance good for travel, particularly with the increasingly vigorous checks on cabin hand baggage weight and size.
Regarding Svalbard trips we went on an Expedition trip, so while accommodation and facilities were fine, they were not like a cruise ship. If you want to see places and wildlife and if you are happy with leaping into Zodiacs and wet landings (on beaches)this may be for you. If you want comfort this will probably come at the expense of reduced wildlife viewing. The experience of the expedition staff is crucial in getting the most from your trip.
Let me know if you have further questions and I will do my best to answer.
