Captured this coyote at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR a couple of days ago. He/she was one in a pack that have been seen roaming the refuge together over the past few days. They are among my favorite subjects.
Thank you Peter, good hearing from you. Coyotes are maligned almost the same as wolves. It is a shame. They are highly intelligent and adaptable and among my favorite subjects. What are you doing in Utah?
Nice capture, Vaughn. And this one looks really healthy. I really like these animals and admire them for their adaptability -- the quality that makes makes them hated by so many others. Take care, CK Nikonian in Ontario, Canada
Thank you Mark, it looks very healthy. Conversely, there was another coyote in the pack that was obviously suffering from the mange. I am hoping that infestation does not spread throughout the population.
Thank you CK, you are absolutely correct. The fact that they are so adaptable makes them a target for ranchers and farmers. I understand they have an investment, but I hope the coyote is not driven to near extention in the same way that wolves have throughout this country.
Thank you Victor. It is hard for me to judge distances, but I believe that at the time of this shot the animal was maybe 200-250 feet from me. The entire pack was very visible that day and were not feeling very shy.
Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR was an unusual place. Not what I expected right there in Denver and surrounded by industry the way it is. Made for a great opener, I think! Made me want a MUCH longer lens, though...
RMA is an oasis in the midst of an urban surrounding. They have expanded the arsenal to the general public. It has become a wonderful place to shoot and has saved my gas bill going to Rocky Mtn National Park.
