Hello..thought I would come here for a little advice. My Cousin's son won a 500 dollar gift certificate to adorama in a Photobucket contest.(little snot :-P).and wants to get a macro lens. ( the kid just picked up a camera a year or so ago and has come a long way , but like I was at his age has not a lot of guidance)
He was looking at the Canon 60 mm f/2.8 .I suggested the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 because I think he might be disappointed in the working distance of 60mm macro lens vs the 90mm. ( bugs and such you know do not always like you to be that close)
So other than the $$ (with rebate the tamron is about 40 dollars cheaper)and the working distances,I thought I would ask if anyone here could give me any pros or cons on the canon lens?
Thanks a lot!

I don't know the Canon, but I do have the Tamron 90/2.8 Macro 1:1, the older motor-less version, and I'm quite happy about it. With the crop factor of my D300, I get quite nice results, but on the D700 as well.
Hope this helps!

You're right on the money - the 90 will be a better fit. Especially considering that it's less expensive. It's not just Canon, most of us would recommend the longer Tamron over the Nikkor 60/f2.8 AFS too.
