Some things that caught my eye are 6.5 FPS, sensor auto clean, wireless transfer, 3 inch lcd display, live view and silent mode... cool stuff for this price range! Can't wait to see what Nikon offers to compete.

Nice improvement over 30D, but my initial thoughts are as follws:
Ok, it has the dust removal function - of which I don't know how effective it is. I have my D200 for 18 months now and not once, despite constant lens changes, had any dust problems.
It has life view - could be interesting when working on close distance/critical sharpness subjects on a tripod.
It's a bit faster than the D200, but - since I shoot RAW only - I prefer the bigger buffer of the D200 (22 RAW ./. 17 in 40D) over that little speed improvement.
According to my info the picture angle of the 40D is 1.6 over the 1.5 of the D200 (in my book the wrong direction...).
About the body quality: let's see, at least the D200 feels excellent in this department.
The 14 BIT processing - looking forward to the first real world test pictures.
So, I am not saying that the 40D is not a nice addition to the market, in fact the specs appear to be very good, but I will for sure not lose any sleep over it, let alone jump ship. The D200 is out since Nov. 05 and - in my eyes - still very much competitive, if a little more expensive. If I bought myself into a new system in that price range, well, I would try out (handling and picture quality) and decide.
Yawn. Nice, but I'm not too impressed. Same ole build quality D200 still way better, no "weather" sealing, decent speed increase but not a biggy, pathetic AF layout IMO though I do like the 9 x-type, lame gimmicky live view, silent shooting for you perverts out there, auto ISO only in special modes, dust removal nice, but would rather have R&D go to something more useful and necessary, 14-bit is nice and Nikon will match it. Seems more like competition for the D80 than the D200. If Nikon replaces the D200 with something like this, I'll buy a D200.
".....We're looking for an exact clarification on this point, it appears that while Canon has now weatherproofed the battery and storage compartment doors (water and dust can't enter these compartments when the doors are closed) other areas such as buttons and dials aren't fully weatherproofed as they are on the EOS-1D series. Hence while the EOS 40D's weatherproofing is an improvement over the EOS 30D it doesn't appear to be up to EOS-1D standards....."
There is no weather sealing like K10d and D200 have.
Just took a look at dpreview, and it appears that a significant number of Canonites are either disappointed or not impressed with the initial specs. If I had a 30D, I'd definitely be keeping it for quite a while longer.
Well - wait a couple days, ( I mean, like, about two), before you grab that 40D - I think the image quality, speed and resolution wars are about to end - at least till the next generation of cameras a few years down the road.
The new Sony 12.4mpix CMOS sensor, (rated at 10FPS), is probably going to be in the D200 replacement and I'd be willing to bet that we will see the D2xs replacement as well with ~22mpix.
I did read the DP Review 40D preview. No mention of the viewfinder being improved, which I thought Canon would have picked up on as having been a very positive feature of the D200 and D80. The granularity of control we like in our Nikons doesn't seem to be there either. That and the camera is only now getting to 10mpix, (btw, the least of my requirements).
I have read into this, of course. I can see the new D200 replacement being based on the new Sony sensor and at 10fps, this is a design beyond the 40D in resolution, throughput and has to be at least equivalent image quality - in fact I believe this camera will challenge the 5D. YMMV.
Also, if Sony has a 12.4 mpix sensor, I think it is easy to extrapolate they have something more "D3xish".
And yes, I believe we are near a big announcement!
