aaaluther I am looking for recommendations for a dedicated flash for my N80, which I recently purchased. I am looking for something with nice features in the $100 to $150 range---The Nikon's are out of my price range----
Don't forget the used market. I wasn't really looking for a flash because I figured there was no way I could afford an SB-28 etc. Then one day in my local camera store I stumbled on a used SB-24 which fell into my price range. It doesn't have the muscle of the 28 necessarily, but it is a more than capable flash and I have been very pleased with the results it has given me in a wide variety of shooting situations, from indoor parties to African safaris.
Trev, you may want to take a look at the Sunpak 4000 AF. It is in the price range that you are looking to spend and has nice features in it. It has a LCD display, horizontal bounce capability, front and rear curtain synch, and a host of other nice features. For a few dollars more Sunpak also has the 5000 AF which is their top of line shoe mount AF Flash. It has more power, horizontal and vertical bounce capability, illuminated display, and most of the other features found on Nikon top of the line flash units. The 4000 AF is around $159.00 (US) and the 5000 AF is around $199.00 (US) and are certainly worth taking a look at.
I have the SB-50 and it is a great little unit. $149 Grey market at B&H. I too had only $150 or so to spend, and was deciding between the Sunpak 5000AF and the SB-50. I hesitated on the SB-50 because of the lower guide number, but it has better wireless TTL capability, and I didn't want to take a chance on a non Nikon flash.
I have to say I do not regret it one bit. It is more than powerful for all but the most extreme shooting situations I have come across. The only time it was not powerful enough for me was at a dolphin show, and I doubt the SB-28 would have had the range from as far away as I was.
