Because dealers here only stock a small selection of mostly heavier commercial models, I haven't had the opportunity to look at the 3205GN tripod. It seems to fit my intended use as I plan to take it along with me on my motorcycle travels. Its light weight (2.2kg), short when closed (17cm). Its also a little short (148 cm) but you can't get it all.
I can't decide on a head and having never used a good tripod, I am guessing. Would I go wrong with a 3030 or 3030G? I don't plan any heavier than a N80 with a 70-300 D ED AF.
Anybody see a problem here or have a suggestion of a proven combination that may be a better choice?
Nope. No problems. The 3205GN with a 3030G work very well and they look kind of neat in their green presentation. If you are taller than 6 ft, you may want consider the option to switch from the 3205GN (extending to 47" tall without the center column) to a 3221GN (extending to 53.6" tall without center column).
Well its no longer a blind purchase. I found one here in town to look at. Its real nice and I am seriously considering buying it. If I do I probably won't use it for travel because it is heavier and longer than I thought it would be. I'm not sure I would use it enough to take along but would use it otherwise. Time to re-evaluate. Always a good idea to get a "hands on" look.
Yes, always nice to see and feel the stuff before buying. I bought a Manfrotto 055CB Triminor Pro (Bogen 3021BN) and as it stayed at home most of the time I then bought a Manfrotto 190D (Bogen 3001N) and finally a Manfrotto 440 Carbon One (Bogen 3444). So you can see why I understand.
I looked at the 3443 but somehow missed seeing the 3444 which has a smaller closed length. Really nice. Probably a stretch as I somehow feel guilty buying something like this as a beginner. Sort of like I haven't paid my dues so I don't deserve it yet. I'll look at one today. If you buy a quality product you can always sell it I suppose.
I just ordered a Bogen 3444D tripod and a 3431QR Proball head. I also threw in the carrying strap. Thank you for all the information I have received on this site concerning tripods, heads, and "best fit for the application experience". I have no doubt this will be a good combination for my needs. I look forward to more advice from you in the future. Hopefully in time I can offer my own experience as well.
