I do it all the time, I've walked for miles with my 500mm f/4P & Nikon F4 attached to my Arca Swiss ballhead with the tripod slung on my shoulder. Just make sure you have the clamp tightend down........

I wouldn't worry so much about having the camera slip from the mount, but rather the dramatic impact of the assembled camera and tripod should I trip or slip myself. I never transport my camera for any distance without having a strap around my neck for security. I can still do this with a tripod attached, but I wouldn't go very far with this somewhat awkward method of transport. But, hey, if I'm going very far why did I spend so much money on a quick release system and not use it?
