Have Vanguard with pan-head that came with it.
So question I have is thinking of getting a ball-head for it,
I see there are some with the pistol grip and can handle a good amount of weight. So is the pistol grip easier to use or i can just as good
use the ball-head without the pistol grip?

Pistol Grips seems to be somewhat of an acquired taste in the forum. Those that have them and like them, really like them. Others seem to have issues with the head slipping. I had initially considered a pistol grip when I was putting together my set-up, but ended up buying a ballhead instead. A well made ballhead is truly a pleasure to use. Is thee some special feature of the pistol grip that you need?

I found that a Vanguard GH-100 pistol grip ball head could not support a D800 at any significant angle off of horizontal when I had a 70-300mm or 24-120mm mounted. The specs on the head claim to support 13+ lbs.
On the other hand, it works really well with a Nikon V1 and 30-110mm or a Nikon FA and 35-105mm.
