Hi folks, I used the search function, but I couldn't find just what I was looking for. I have a Sunpro tripod, the one with carbon fiber legs. It is an all right pod but the elevate and pan head that came on it is a piece of junk. I removed the head and it looks to be a 1/4-20 stud that the head screws on to. I ordered a Manfrotto ball head, 496C, I think, but I have not received it yet. I am wondering what size threaded hole will be in the bottom of the ball head. If the Manfrotto requires a larger stud, I will gently but firmly clamp up the center post and then drill out the 1/4-20. Can anyone tell me what size stud I will need to put in? I will drill and tap threads to the larger size and probably ad a few drops of JB Weld as well. Thanks in advance, Mike Albuquerque, New Mexico
Mike; My memory isn't what it used to be, but I believe the proper size of the "European" head stud is 8-32. There are adapters you can buy that will screw on to the standard 1/4-20 stud to adapt it. Search eBay "Tripod adapter screw", and see what you can come up with.
Thanks Carl and Alan, A 3/8-16 sounds right. 8-32 would be pretty small. I appreciate your help. I don't really find myself needing a tripod all that often so I am trying to put together something seviceable without spending a fortune. Thanks again.
Thanks for all your help. My DIY project worked out nicely with some 3/8ths threaded rod and a tap. I put a dollop of JB Weld on the stud before I screwed it in. It is rock solid. It makes for a fairly decent lightweight tripod. Thanks again. Mike
Woops; I must have been thinking about rifle scope mounting screws, but this item on daBay might be what you are looking for. The photo didn't make it through, though. Oh well. I was sure I had a couple of them somewhere, and I'd send you one, but 15 minutes of ratting through my collection of photo stuff that may be useful in some future century didn't produce them. Don't you just hate it when that happens?
