Hi, I am still working on getting a tripod for my 400/2.8. I would like to get a look at the 3 or 5 series Gitzo, but no one in Iowa stocks them. Are there any dealers in Illinois that carry them? or lacking that, does anyone who has one live near me that I could meet up with and get a look at one? I have looked at the Induro CT414 owned by a friend who uses it with a Canon 600/4 and likes that, which makes me wonder if the 3 series Gitzo would not be just as good if not better as both have the same load rating. I would appreciate any help.
Sometimes Calumet Photographic in Chicago at 1111 N. Cherry Avenue Chicago, IL 60642 312.440.4920 and in Oak Brook at 1600 W. 16th Street Oak Brook, IL 60523 630.860.7458 have a few Gitzos on display. You could ask them about the models you are considering. You could also try Central Camera at 230 S. Wabash Chicago, IL 60604 (1800) 421-1899.
Thanks Marty. Calumets website only lists the smaller Gitzos, but will call them and Central tomorrow. I could use a trip to Chicago, as have not been there for a while, and this would be a good excuse, if either of them have them in stock.
You may find a 3 series for your 400/2.8 to be inadequate. I own a 3541LS and used it with my 500/4, while adequate it was not optimal. I went to a 5 series and the difference is like night and day. Tap testing was an eye opener, on the 3 series it took 3-4 seconds for the lens to settle down on the 5 series it took 1 second. I know it does not seem like a lot of difference between the two, however, my keeper rate on the first outing with the 5 series increased significantly.
Unless there is a very important reason to go lighter I suggest going to a 5 to get the best out of your 400/2.8.
