Soon I'll be purchasing a long tele zoom, either the Tamron 200-400 or Sigma 150-500 for use on my D200...I've looked at the Nikon options but have made the decision to go this route..will be used for bird photography, and relatively static other long lens subjects..

Currently I have a Bogen 3011 (and a 3001) tripod and 329 (and a 3030) 3-way head. I suspect the head isn't going to be up to the task..my thinking is that a quality head on the 3011 is my first move.

Woud be interested in views on whether:

1) keep head but get new legs
2) keep legs and get new head
3) plunge and get both (prefer not to as the tax man cometh...)

My thoughts are one of the Markins or Kirk heads. Of course I won't buy anything until I have spent some time with the lens on my current support system.

I guess my question is between head and tripod, what is logical next upgrade that would provide maximum benefit?

Thanks,

Rick

excuse typos..
