Hi! I recently purchased a Gitzo Tripod GT2531 Series 2 Carbon Fiber 3-Section G-Lock. I would like to know what would be a great ball head to put on it. I use the Nikon D800 with 3 lenses now: the Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm 1:4G ED VR lens; the Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G ED VR lens; and the Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-135mm 5.6G ED lens. Thank you very much for your help!
One more for the Markins... I have the same tripod and use a Markins M10 which has been replaced with the Q10. Once you set it for the "Sweet Spot" you do not have to turn any knobs unless you go to a another lens with a different weight or balance.
I would also suggest looking into an L Bracket over a plate. This will allow you to change from Landscape to Portrait very quickly without having to swing the lens over into the slot on the head. This will keep the camera centered on the head and at the same eye level.

In my considered opinion, I would go with the Markins Q20 for just a few dollars more. Then you would be set for a lifetime and never have to worry about another ball head no matter how many times you replaced your cameras, no matter what size. I can only recommend this because of the experience of owning a Nikon D300s, using a heavy lens (18-300) and mounting it on the Gitzo GT2541 with the Markins Q20. Works great. I forgot to also tell you that I have the MB-D10 battery pack on my D300s, which makes the whole outfit very heavy.
