We picked up a low end but recommended by several tripod Sunpak - PlatinumPlus Ultra 7000 2-in-1 70"
I purchased a Black Rapid slim shoulder strap and then picked up the black rapid D ring for tripod mount, so you can use both the monopod and the strap. The screw on the BR is way to short and won't work on our tripod.
Any suggestions for longer screws that are sturdy enough to also be used with the BR strap while out hiking?

I don't understand the question. As I understand it (I own a black rapid strap), the black rapid D ring for tripod mount is the D ring that is supposed to screw into the threaded tripod mounting hole on the bottom of your camera. Are you trying to attach your strap to the camera while it is mounted on the monopod/tripod - possibly replacing the mounting stud on the tripod with the black rapid D ring - threading it all the way through from the bottom of the tripod mounting plate?
If that is what you're trying to do, I'd consider a 3/8 16 eye bolt - probably available in a local hardware store. You would also want to add an extra nut and lock washer on the eye bolt under the mounting plate to leave the correct length of bolt protruding from the mounting surface on the tripod.
Now that is just a wild guess at what you may be trying to do. Apologies if I guessed wrong.
