I have an old Gitzo legset (1220) with a centre post I never use. I'd like to add the Markins base (TB-20) which is apparently compatible with this tripod, and then put on a Q20 head. Does anyone know whether this will work? i.e. is the TB-20 big enough to take the base of the Q20 without overhang? thanks!
Q20 generally fits and made for 3 series and with TB-30. I have the Arca Swiss Z1 (equivalent of Q20) on TB-21 off GT2541. there is a slight overhang but i haven't seen any performance issues. I think the top diameter is same for both TB-20 and TB-21 which is 2.48. Q20's base diameter is 2.68 and hence you will have a slight overhang but I don't think that should be a problem. I am no expert on these, just my 2cents.
Thanks for the information. On a related issue, does anyone know if a Q10 would be enough for my D7000 + battery grip + Sigma 120-400? I can see that my G1220 legs aren't optimal for the Q20, but don't really feel I can spring for 3-series legs right now. thanks, Terry
Since the Sigma 120-400mm has a foot, even the Q3 should have no problem supporting your rig. Therefore both the Q10 or Q20 will be adequate. Where the Q20 will shine is when you are using a front heavy lens that does not have a tripod foot. Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!
The Panning base of the Q20 is 68mm (2.68") in diameter. The TB-20 is 63mm (2.48") in diameter at the top. The Panning base of the Q10 is 62mm (2.44") in diameter. Either head is usable with the TB-20. Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!
Thanks all for the very helpful info. I think I will avoid the overhang issue and go for the Q10 + TB-20, which should be a better 'fit' for the tripod size. I'm not planning on buying a longer lens, and it sounds like the Q20 might be overkill.
