I recently bought a Gitzo GT3541. Since I don't need the center column, I tried removing it but the attachment is not that strong overall. A little twist on the plate will turn it and the head becomes little wobbly. I am using Arca Swiss Z1 with it. I may be doing something wrong here but wanted to check what others have to say about removing the center column and attaching the head directly on the plate. Is this stable enough ?
Also, I wanted to get the Markin Tb-30 for it but Markins website says that TB-30 doesn't fit GT3541L purchased after Apr. 2012, which is my situation. Any other manufactures makes the same kind of base plate ?
Anybody knows what exactly the difference is between the older and 2012 models for 3541 ? I know that they did a lot of design change for the Systematic/Mountaineer series and introduced a 2 version (ex, GT3542LS) but don't see any information on the version 1 of the Mountaineer series (GT3541) though. I have a GT2541 (alongwith TB-21) purchased 2 yrs before and don't see any visible difference in design between the 2 and 3 mountaineer series.
I would contact the Nikonian Pro shop and ask about TB-30 compatibility with your Mountaineer GT3541. It should be compatable, as far as I know there has not been any changes to the Mountaineer GT3541 since it was introduced. The Systematic series was updated for 2012, but not the Mountaineer series.
The GT3541 description at the Pro shop may be a little out of date, I believe when they say GT3541 "new" features they are comparing the GT3541 to the older (discontinued) GT3540.
If you are not going to use the center column, why not return the Mountaineer and get the the Systematic model that doesn't have a center column? An optional center column can be purchased separately later if you decide you need one.
If you are interested in the changes Gitzo made to the 2012 Systematic series click on the link below - it goes to the Gitzo website. Scroll to the bottom of the webpage for pictures of the changes that they describe at the top of the webpage.

The only reason why I avoided the Systematic series is because of the more girth than the mountaineer. I do love to backpack and mountaineer slides in very well due to the slickness. I will have to somehow find out how much more the girth is as compared to mountaineer ? also, removing the center column reduces some of the weight, its actually .6lb lesser. I will get in touch with the pro shop and see what they has to say about the tb-30.
