Question about Markins ball head and QR plates
When I was looking at the Markins ball heads with lever release in the Pro Photo shop, I read the following:
Though this lever release quick release clamp is adaptable to accommodate different brands of plates, it may not be practical to do so in the field with mixed brands of varied widths plates. We recommend the use of single brand of plates with this lever release clamp. With mixed width plates, the Q20-KR with its traditional Screw Knob type Quick Release Clamp will be more flexible in the field. Markins and Kirk plates and L-Brackets have proven to be very compatible.
I plan on getting the replacement Kirk lens collar for my Nikon 300mm F/4 AFS lens, and it includes a QR plate. Will this collar be compatible with the Markins ball head with lever release or should I get the ball head with screw knob QR clamp? Thanks.

The reason for the warning is there may be a slight variation in the size of plates made by different manufactureres. The RRS Lever Clamp has no adjustment and sometimes a plate from Kirk, or Markins would be slightly larger or smaller creating an issue with fit. A loose fit is as bad as a fit that is too tight as there are problems with each.
Bottom Line: It is something you should consider before making your decision.
While the Markins Lever Clamp is adjustable it is not practical to adjust it every time you change cameras or lenses on your tripod.

If you purchase all of your plates from Kirk, you should not have any issues with fit with either type clamp. Most of the plates and L-Brackets made by other manufacturers should fit the Lever Clamp without adjustment as well. However with the Lever Clamp, there is the risk that there might be a problem with a few plates. The Screw Clamp only takes a second or so longer to tighten or loosen than the lever clamp.
I have both screw clamps and Markins Lever Clamps.
I have Plates, L-Brackets and Accesories made by Kirk, RRS, and Wimberley and have never had an issue with fit on either the screw clamps or the Markins Lever Clamps. In other words I have never had to adjust the Lever Clamp for any of my Plates, L-Brackets, or Accessories. Maybe I have been lucky. Your experience may be different.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

I have all of the Kirk replacement lens tripod collars for the lenses that accept it and had no problem with the Markins lever clamp.
The varations between Markins and the Kirk plates and L-brackets are minimal if any.
Once it is adjusted (if needed), that's it. No need to touch it again with that mix and it is a very simple operation.
P.S. Like Marty, I also have Wimberley plates and one RRS L-Bracket and they fit without a problem.
Have a great time :-)
