Looking for opinions on ball heads
Since acquiring a Nikon 300mm f/4 lens, I've been looking at different ball heads, and I came across one of the Acratech ball heads with can also be used as a winberley. It's the Acratech GV2. Has anyone had hands-on experience with this ball head? I've also looked at the Markins and Kirk ball heads, but they do not function as a winberley without the addition of the winberley sidekick. Thanks.

I've never handled that Acra-tech ballhead. However, I know, having played with this idea with regular heads, that having the lens well off center, as it must be without a proper gimbal, is not ideal. It may be "good enough" for some uses but I don't think it will replace a gimbal without some fairly serious compromises.
I own 2 Markins heads, one in each size, and highly recommend them. They work well with a Sidekick. I'd recommend the Q20 since it has the largest and therefore most robust pan base (of the 3 Markins heads). I gimbal should have the best pan base posssible. The Q10 will work fine but I would spend the extra $50 or so in this case. I've used my Sidekick on both my (older) M10 and M20 heads, and even the Q3.

I led a wildlife workshop 3 weeks ago and one of the participants had the Acratech GV2. After the classroom portion of the workshop, I took everyone out into a wildlife refuge to practice what they had learned. He let me play with his rig for about 5 minutes and I was not impressed. On the other hand, he played with my RRS BH 55 with a Wimberley Sidekick attached while I was on his rig, and when I took back my equipment, he told me he was dumping the Acratech GV2 and purchasing the Sidekick to put on either a RRS BH 55 or another similar ball head. I told him my favorites via which he couldn't go wrong were the BH 55 and the Markins Q20. He also told me he didn't particularly like the Acratech GV2 as a standard ball head, and seeing how well the Sidekick worked, was "kicking" himself for not going that way.

Thanks Neil & Ned. That's the kind of information I was looking for. Much appreciated! I was originally looking at the Kirk BH-1 with the Wimberley sidekick when I came across the Acratech GV2. So, I will probably go with the Kirk or the Markins. Thanks again.
