I have a D800 with a Nikon 105VR mounted on a Vanguard 250 Ball Head rated at 44 lbs. I am aware that when doing true macro, almost all ball heads have a little 'give' when the ball head is tightened down. Asside from moving the 'subject' into the frame when the camera/lens are in position...is there a trick or additional support bracket (other than a gimbal)that will allow the camera set-up to not drift down after the head is tightened.

When you are in 1:1 and the lens is pointed down at about 30 degrees from plane(with 45 being straight down) a little movement in the set-up will take the subject from the center away from frame. I have a macro focusing rail and have tried to reposition the camera to put the balance point of the camera w/lens over the center of the tripod but it still drifts down after tightening the head. I tried reversing the rail around and that does not work either. Any suggestions ... maybe a longer quick release plate to move the camera back a little??
