From time to time we get a thread or topic with one or more in depth posts or interesting discussion. We cannot pin every interesting thread because that might quickly get out of hand. I thought it might be a good idea to start one pinned topic listing for all these threads.

Feel free to post your thoughts directly to any threads listed here, regardless of age. All Nikonians have something to contribute, especially your actual experiences with the gear. The more input the better!

Also feel free to "nominate" any older threads you think are particularly useful by posting a reply here

Gitzo Systematic Vs Mountaineer. Some important features and considerations, with some discussion on Series 2 vs 3.

Long lens plate selection. An interesting thread with much discussion of the more subtle details of choosing a lens plate. Simple decision or fraught with peril?
Manfrotto RC Quick Release System. Jrp illustrates the various Manfrotto QR systems and discusses some considerations. A must read if you are considering a Manfrotto head. You want to pick the best QR variant for your needs.

Selecting and using a gimbal. Neil explains the voodoo required to balance a full Wimberly . Plus discussions of gimbal selection and use.

Can You Overkill a Tripod?. Discusses the Series 2 verses Series 3 Decision, with some test images.

Some subtle benefits to the Markins bi-directional camera plates. As you will see reading the thread, some of those benefits are not obvious and were arrived at very indirectly, at least in this case

Gary Worrall provides a complete illustrated cleaning guide for the later Gitzo G-Lock legs. Thanks Gary! There are some old guides around the net for cleaning older Gitzo legs, but this is the first good guide I've seen for the now current G-Lock legs.

Do you own a Manfrotto 055 PROB tripod and want to eliminate the center column so you do not have to articulate the arm to get down low? See this thread (replies #14/15) for the details.

And here is the complete listing of MAGICA integrated camera support systems and the newest Gitzo tripods

Ned Levy (Ned_L) discusses his use of a Gitzo Traveler tripod. A very coherent and complete explanation of the compromises of a traveler tripod and how he uses it up to 400mm (beyond its design spec).
