I don't think there is an optimum travel tripod in all respects (convenience, performance, price). My travelling tripod is a Series 3.
The Gitzo Traveller is a very ingenious and elegant solution to convenience.
A Series 1 Gitzo Traveler will be very light, compact and therefore convenient, but you should not use lenses over 135mm with it, unless you don't extend all the leg sections. Than means you will need to shoot seating or kneeling; however, in the opinion of more than just a few advanced amateur and even pro Nikonians, the GT1541T fits the bill very well and that is why we now offer a MAGICA Traveller combo.
A series 2 Gitzo GT2540T Traveller has better performance (with longer lenses) with a pro head like the Markins Q3T, especially designed to fit a Traveller tripod. That makes its final price a bit steeper but we may get the combo for you, without the built-in head it used to come with.
