Hi All,

After getting a used 600mm f/4 AF-I Nikkor (Youhoo!) I was confronted with the use of my ballhead (Manfrotto 468RC2).
Altough being a very good ballhead, it was not really suited to long lens photography.

With long lenses ballheads tend to move in all directions causing the horizon to be tilted. You find yourself more often correcting this with the rotating lens collar than really framing your subject...

After trying to find a Wimberley head in Europe and getting frustrated not being able to see one before buying it,
I decided to look for the Manfrotto 393 (Thanks to Len Shepherd for this wise advise!).

A quick look at the head in a store and home it went. What a fantastic value for money!
First thing to do is to balance the lens around the center of gravity.
This can be achieved by moving the lens back- or forwards using the provided sliding plate (Manfrotto 357PLV)

The head is build to give both panoramic and vertical friction movements, so it is really easy to use it for dynamic photography.

If well balanced, you can point it anywhere and just leave it there without locking it - it will stay put - this is a great feature!

The key features are:
- Friction base (S)
- Rubber hand grips
- Rubber protection to prevent damage to the lens when tilted to maximum (R)
- Height adjustments in three steps (P1 P2 P3)
- Value for money (150 Euro)

Some pics bellow might help illustrate what I was saying:
