The combo would be Manfrotto 055X ProB + Manfrotto 486RC2 compact ball head. It would be supporting a D40 and at the moment the 18-55 kit lens, in the future there will be other lenses but unless I win the lottery there wont be any heavy pro lenses,of course if that happens I will buy a Gitzo! The most likely scenario is something of the size/weight of a Sigma 50-150 being the heavy end of the kit.
Thats AU$229 for the legs + AU$109 for the ball head = $338 +postage
Have I got my toe in the water here? Is this a stable enough platform for my kit?

That should be more than adequate for your 18-55. The biggest "complaint" of the 055 for modest sized lenses is the weight and to solve that you have to move up to CF, of course. The 055 should be good for up to about 200mm or so, in any size lens up to a 70-200 or so.
The biggest complaints of the lower priced Bogen heads is framing creep and plate twisting. At 55mm or less, you probably won't have a problem. As you approach and exceed 200mm or so, that could become an issue. If you have plate twisting problems, you can get an "architectural" plate with a lip for about USD $20 to solve that problem.

Thanks for that Neil, sounds as if I am in the ballpark.I,m not likely to be going any bigger than 200 so this is probably my best shot, with that plate upgrade you suggest.
I,m so glad I joined this site, access to experienced and insightfull advice, good information by the bucketload!I love it.

I have the same camera kit and was ready to buy a very similar combo to the one you are considering. And I'm sure it will serve you well if you decide to go for it. Or ... if you can squeeze another $70 into your budget you could get a carbon fiber tripod (such as the Feisol CT-3301) and head (CB-50D) that would be a significant upgrade over the package you are considering without breaking the bank. That's what I did.
