Well, after believing that I was doing things correctly with my old ways, I finally read up thoroughly on the subject of LLT enough to get it right.
Let me tell you, this is the way to go! After lots of work, it has paid dividends in my pictures of birds. Granted I am still working with old equipment and mostly manual focusing, but for me, the results have been much improved.
So, if you have longer lenses and aren't using proper Long Lens Technique, there is certainly room for improvement!
Just wanted to thank the Nikonians who took the time to explain it to me in full detail.
