Has anyone ignored Manfrotto's instruction and greased their ballhead?

I ask, because I need to make my 486's action smoother. Its now installed on my monopod but its course action when partially tightened annoys me. Compared to the Markins M10 on my tripod, its stone age stuff.

So I hope to strip it down and maybe reassemble with masses of silicon grease in the hope I'll get some kind of progressive and smoother action. Anyone got any advise?
