I have had the tripod and head a few days now and my early impressions are:

The ballhead is sublime as I have posted elsewhere. I find it best dampens vibration with the ballhead in its sweetspot and ESPECIALLY with the pan lock JUST locked but not tightened. IMVHO using the head is about finding stable equilibrium - not bolting it down tight. I am glad I chose the M10 vs say the Q3 - my D200 and 17-55 is a bit overbalanced and I wouldn't particularly want anything smaller or lighter.

The legs are jet black and really very simple - Spartan almost. The light weight is wonderful - I want to take them everywhere. They appear well built and both in terms of weight (1030g/2.27lb v 1400g/3.2lb) and extended height (142cm/56in v 138cm/54in) compare favourably with a Gitzo 2530. There is no ALR - but you can get used to that and for me this is no great sacrifice for the gain of 4cm in height and 370g in weight.

I have tested the performance of this combination with two lenses using a cable release throughout.

1. 70-200 with and without TC 17.

With TC - all sections extended there is some visible difference between Mirror Up (MU) and no MU. This improves significantly with progressive retraction of bottom section.

This is to be expected as this 340mm is over the recommended limit for a 2 series - and the TC hardly adds stability in its own right. I would only ever shoot inanimate objects at slow speeds at this focal length no using MU is no big deal for me.

No TC - little difference between MU and non MU even with all sections extended.

2. 85mm - there is observable difference at 1/10 between MU and no MU.

Overall my understanding is that the performance is what one would reasonably expect from a 2 series Gitzo. But That may need independent confirmation.

Given my slow shutter speed work of any live action is normally in the range 17-85mm. I am absolutely delighted with this combination of tripod and head. Here is a link to my first results... all shot at 85mm and mainly on tripod.

With thanks to the many people - Neil, Linze, Howard, Valvo, Chris, Daniel, Rich who helped me make up my mind.
