mount ball head if removing center column in Gitzo 026?
Hi, I just bought a gitzo 026 and was wondering if it is possible to mount a ball head if i want to remove the center column? i can take it out, but am not sure how to secure the base plate back on to screw my ball head on. i tried a search, but couldn't find anything. i see on gitzo's website looking at some of the current tripods, some have a ground set option. I was wondering if anyone knows if the hook that is used for that setting would be compatible with the 026 and if so, where I can inquire about it. Contact Gitzo directly or do i have to go through a dealer? Thanks.

Since this thread has gone so long with out an answer: A few years ago these liitle Gitzo's were all over the place - used and cheap.
The problem is that there are many varations of whats basically the same thing only different. (Some even had intergrated heads. Horrible! Don't go there!) I kept buying and selling them until I found the smallest of them all. (15")
You will have to keep the center collum. That's what the camera plate fastens too. (Nobody makes accessories for these liitle Gitzos.)
I cut the center collum off leaving 1" sticking out of the bottom and wraped this stub with electricians tape as a saftey measure. The plate is not really needed: I remove them and Blue Locktite the head directly to the collum.
The lower thinest legs are useless. Wet noodles, so I took them off. For a head I use a Bogan/Manofottos Monopod swivel with a Kirk quick release bolted on. For panning I loosen the collum clamp - that's why the saftey tape.
This is as light as a tripod gets and is usefull for ground and table top use - provided I don't trust it and always keep one hand on it.

Thinks its only from the Mountaneer series you can remove the center comlomn and insert a plate.
Just in case you are interested in a reasonably priced tripod you can tailor :
