Can Manfrotto Digi 728B support D40?
I have a set of Nikon gears of D40(500g) + 18-70(400g) + 70-300VR(750g).
Now I am interested in the Manfrotto Digi 728B tripod because of the color scheme (large black + a red point) which is similar to Nikon DSLR.
I am worried about the stability of this tripod when mounting D40 + 70-300VR (1.4kg approx.)
Can anyone who has used this tripod give me some information? Thanks a lot!
P.S. although the spec. of this pod says that the maximum weight it can support is 3.5kg, but I didn't find that it is for DSLR in official docs.

First, pay no attention to the "Digi" designation. The tripod will not know whether you have a 35mm SLR, APS-C digital, or 6x6 medium format camera on it. "Digi" and "digital" are just marketing hype when it comes to tripods.
Second, the tripod you mention has 4 sections to each leg. If you're concerned about the collapsed size then this is a valid consideration. Otherwise, 3 section legs such as those found on the 3021 and 3221 tripods are steadier, especially when the lowest section is extended.
The 3021 and 3221 tripods, in all their myriad configurations, are quite popular and stable. The variety of available heads simply adds to the confusion, but the 486RC2 is a popular head. However, the 3021/486RC2 combo will cost about twice as much as the one you've currently selected.
If you haven't already done so, I suggest reading the Tripod FAQ at the top of this forum.

I used a Manfrotto 785B digital tripod with my D50 and 75-300 last year in Alaska and it was fine. Not sure how that tripod compares to yours, but I think my camera and lens are heavier than your gear.
