From your own experience if you've used both these configurations, which is more stable, a 4 section tripod extended all the way, or a three section tripod - extended all the way with the centre column extended all the way up?

I'm trying to decide between the Gitzo G3530 (with centre column) or the Gitzo 3540XLS. The G3530 with centre column extended will give me the height I occasionally need, but I'm leary about using it that way. The 3540XLS will be used mainly with only three sections extended, but would actually give me greater height than the 3530 with column when I need it - but's it's 4 sections. Is it getting unstable at that point?

And lastly, is a 4 section tripod extended to only 3 sections as stable as a 3 section tripod? I assume so... but curious to know what others think.
