Which tripod/head combination to chose
LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-01 AT 03:41 PM (GMT)
I have been offered two sets of used tripod/head combinations and I am about to choose one - within the next two days. But I find it very difficult to make the decision since I haven´s tried the two sets. I hope some of you Nikonians can help my out.
No. 1 offer: Velbon D-600 tripod with Manfrotto 029 head (Bogen 3047). Price appr. §100.
No. 2 offer: Manfrotto 055CB (Bogen 3021N) with heavy duty ball head 168 (Bogen 3055). Price appr. §100.
My main corncern is sturdiness of the set to avoid vibrations and I am mainly going to use the set photographing wildlife with my F100 and the Nikkor 75-300/4,5-5,6.
I´ll appreciate all the help I can get.

I used to own a 3021 and can attest that it's a very solid tripod. The "N" version is improved over the unit I owned with quick lever leg locks. It also features a new horizontal mount for the center column that is similar to my new carbon fiber Manfrotto tripod. In addition, it now has a fourth leg angle setting that lets you use the tripod at ground level. It's an excellent choice (one of the best designed tripods ever).
The Velbon D-600 is marketed as a video tripod. It has a crank center post (without the flexibility of the 3021N). It has leg braces which ad rigidity to the tripod, but which are nowhere near as versatile as the adjustable angle legs of the 3021. It will be slower to set up, as well.
I'm not a fan of three-way heads myself, so the 3047 doesn't appeal. I don't like the weight, bulk and handles that snag on straps. The 3055 wouldn't be a keeper for me either. It's heavy for a ball head and has levers that are more suited to studio work than field work. However, you can always upgrade or change heads later. Both are sturdy and reliable.

Thank you my fellow Nikonians
I have decided to go for option two and thus follow your advices.
I bought the Manfrotto 3 way Pro head 229 (Bogen 3039) as well. The 229 can carry 12 kg and uses the same hex plates as 168(3055).
Total cost of the used set: 55(3021N), 168(3055), 229(3039), hex plates and strap is less than §180. I belive it´s a good price.
Can´t wait for delivery
